Case Study 1: 2nd Grade MAP Reading Growth Course
Challenge
In my classroom, I noticed that many of my 2nd grade students needed more structured and engaging support to develop key reading skills such as fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. In addition, students were preparing for MAP Growth assessments, and they needed consistent practice that was both standards-aligned and engaging enough to maintain their attention and motivation.
Process
To address this need, I designed a complete 2nd Grade MAP Reading Growth Course using instructional design principles and learning theory. I began by identifying learner needs, focusing on gaps in reading fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary development.
I then aligned learning objectives with measurable outcomes to ensure that each activity directly supported student growth. I structured the course into clear learning modules that included instruction, guided practice, and independent activities.
To support engagement and accessibility, I incorporated multiple digital tools such as Google Classroom, Canva, Nearpod, Padlet, Quizizz, and Flip. These tools allowed me to create interactive lessons, visual learning supports, and opportunities for student collaboration and reflection. I also applied Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to ensure that students with different learning needs could access content in multiple ways.
Throughout the design process, I focused on making the learning experience structured, consistent, and easy for young learners to navigate.
Tools Used
Google Classroom, Canva, Nearpod, Padlet, Quizizz, Kahoot!, Flip, Seesaw
Result
The final course provides a structured and engaging learning environment that supports reading development in a meaningful way. Students are able to practice reading skills through interactive activities, receive immediate feedback, and engage with content in multiple formats. This course reflects my ability to design learner-centered instruction that is both academically aligned and engaging for early elementary students.
Case Study 2: Interactive Sight Word and Fluency Activities
Challenge
Many of my students needed repeated exposure and practice with sight words and reading fluency skills. However, traditional worksheets alone were not engaging enough to keep students motivated or actively involved in the learning process. I needed to design activities that would increase repetition while also making learning interactive and enjoyable.
Process
To address this challenge, I designed a set of interactive digital activities focused on sight word recognition and reading fluency practice. I intentionally used gamification and repetition strategies to strengthen student mastery of foundational reading skills.
I created activities using platforms such as Quizizz and Kahoot to make practice more engaging and game-based. I also used Seesaw and Canva to design visual and interactive learning materials that students could access independently or during guided instruction.
The activities were structured to provide immediate feedback, encourage repeated practice, and allow students to track their own progress. I focused on making sure the learning experience was simple, consistent, and age-appropriate for 2nd grade learners.
Tools Used
Quizizz, Kahoot!, Canva, Seesaw
Result
The final activities increased student engagement and participation during reading practice. Students showed greater enthusiasm for practicing sight words and demonstrated improved fluency through repeated exposure and interactive learning experiences. This project reflects my ability to transform traditional instruction into engaging, technology-enhanced learning experiences that support student achievement.
