My approach to learning design and educational technology is grounded in the belief that valuable lessons should be clear, inclusive, engaging, and purposeful. Throughout this program, I have come to see instructional design as more than just structuring content or selecting digital tools. Instead, it is a thoughtful process that blends educational theory with practical decision-making to support real learners. Each course and project helped shape how I think about design, emphasizing the importance of structure, attainability, and purposeful engagement.
Learning theories and instructional design models played a crucial role in shaping how I design instruction. The Community of Inquiry framework helped me better comprehend how learning happens in virtual and blended environments. By focusing on cognitive, social, and teaching presence, I learned how crucial it is for students to feel supported, connected, and challenged at the same time (Garrison et al., 2000). In my LMS and discussion-based projects, I applied this framework by creating prompts that encouraged students to think deeply, interact with peers, and reflect on their learning while still providing clear guidance and expectations. This approach helped balance independence with structure, which I believe is essential for effective learning.
Work completed in TECH 5273 further strengthened this understanding by highlighting the importance of well-structured discussion design. I intentionally created prompts that moved beyond simple recall and required students to explain their thinking, justify their choices, and compare ideas with classmates. This experience reinforced my belief that meaningful discussion design fosters deeper thinking, collaboration, and a strong sense of learning community when structure and interaction are carefully balanced.
The ADDIE model gave me a clear process for designing instruction in a more intentional way. Rather than jumping right into creating resources or choosing tools, ADDIE motivated me to slow down and think through each phase of the design process. During several projects, I used this model to align goals, activities, and assessments more closely. This helped ensure that each part of the educational experience served a definite aim and supported the overall goals of the course. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) further strengthened my approach by highlighting the importance of accessibility and flexibility. Applying UDL principles forced me to consider how learners participate with content, how they display understanding, and how motivation can be supported through choosing multiple pathways (CAST, 2018).
My belief about technology in learning environments has also advanced throughout this program. I now see technology as a support tool rather than the center of instruction. Technology should make learning clearer, more accessible, or more interesting, not more complicated. This belief guided my decisions when incorporating tools such as Canva, LMS features, and AI-supported activities. For example, when creating interactive Canva lessons, I focused on simple layouts, organization, structure, and clear navigation to assist learners in staying focused on the content instead of the technology. When experimenting with AI tools, I considered how they could support reflection, discussion, or idea development while still maintaining valuable human interaction. These experiences reinforced my belief that technology should always serve a learning purpose.
My experience in TECH 5273 further shaped this perspective by demonstrating how artificial intelligence can be used as a thoughtful design partner. AI supported idea generation, prompt refinement, and evaluation, but instructional decisions remained grounded in educator judgment. Reviewing and revising AI-generated content for accuracy, clarity, and alignment reinforced my belief that technology is most effective when it enhances the design process without replacing the educator’s role.
When looking across my lab work and course projects, several consistent patterns stand out in how I approach accessibility, participation, and assessment. I repeatedly prioritized clear instructions, predictable organization, and visual simplicity. These design choices were intentional and aimed at lessening cognitive overload so students could focus on learning rather than figuring out what to do next. Engagement was supported through interactive elements, real-life connections, and chances for reflection. In terms of assessment, I focused on alignment with educational objectives and often included formative opportunities that allowed students to check their understanding and grow. These patterns reflect my core values as a learning designer: clarity, equity, and valuable learning experiences for all learners.
In TECH 273, these principles were especially evident through the use of developmentally appropriate examples and real-life scenarios that made learning attainable and relevant for students.
My understanding of adult learning principles also grew significantly during this program. I developed a greater appreciation for the importance of relevance, autonomy, and practical application in adult learning environments. Adult learners are more inspired when learning feels meaningful and directly intertwined with their experiences or professional goals (Knowles et al., 2015). This understanding encouraged my creative decisions by inspiring me to include opportunities for choice, reflection, and application. Many of my projects incorporated real-life scenarios or open-ended responses, allowing students to connect new knowledge to their own contexts.
Through both research and hands-on experience, I have come to believe that effective learning environments share several key elements. These include clearly defined goals, accessible and engaging content, opportunities for interaction, meaningful assessment, and a strong instructional presence. My coursework consistently highlighted the importance of alignment among these elements, and I saw firsthand how thoughtful creativity improves the learner experience. When objectives, activities, and assessments are vividly connected, learners are more likely to feel confident, supported, and encouraged.
Overall, this program has helped me develop a stronger, more intentional philosophy of learning design and educational technology. I now approach instructional design with greater confidence and clarity, using learning theories and research to guide my decisions while remaining focused on the needs of learners. Moving forward, this philosophy will continue to shape my work as I design learning experiences that are accessible, engaging, and grounded in best practices.
